Psa - Pseudomonas Syringae Actinidae

September 2011 Update

The key messages are still pretty much the same:

  • Protect yourself
  • Monitor for secondary symptoms
  • Remove and destroy infected vines

Protect your orchard

Maintain your protective cover sprays. These should be in place before significant rain events and should be reinstated as soon after as possible. This will depend on the amount of rain and the form of your copper spray.
Your spray intervals will need to be fairly close over the pre-blossom period to cover the newly emerging growth and rapidly expanding leaves.

Achieving excellent spray coverage is imperative and a closer re-spray interval and more frequent spraying will improve coverage of persistent cover sprays.

Hygiene protocols are also important tools to help protect your orchard. They should be:

  • Effective
  • Easy to use
  • Used by everyone entering the orchard
  • Used every time, even when the boss is not there

Monitor your orchard for secondary symptoms. The sooner an infection is identified and destroyed the better the chance of minimising the losses.

Remove and destroy infected vines by burning or burying at least 0.5 m deep.
