About the Bay of Plenty
The Bay of Plenty region is the kiwifruit capital of the world and is aptly named; there is plenty of everything! Whether you’re after adventure, beach life or a bit of indulgence, the Bay of Plenty has all the bases covered and is one of the country’s top holiday destinations for Kiwis. This beautiful coastal region boasts gorgeous sandy beaches, great surfing, mountain biking and walking. And you’re never far away from a good coffee at the many cafes and shops. The locals are friendly; the weather is welcoming and the opportunities abundant.
Tauranga/Te Puke
From the beaches and harbour to a thriving kiwifruit industry and Maori culture, the coastal Bay of Plenty is a great holiday destination. The region's main city is Tauranga and the coastal suburbs of Mount Maunganui and Papamoa have long been popular with visitors. The region is also home to the heart of the kiwifruit industry in Te Puke.
There are plenty of things to do in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty. Choose from water adventures like white-water rafting, kayaking, dolphin encounters, parasailing and jetboating. There’s also skydiving, scenic flights, blokarting (a locally-invented land sailor), horse treks, cultural experiences, golf courses and a variety of gardens and museums to peruse.
Whakatane/Edgecumbe
One of the sunniest places in New Zealand, the Whakatane/Edgecumbe district is home to 34,400 people. Sandy beaches are predominant along the 54 kilometres of coastline. Fishing, surfing, jet boating, national park, lakes, kayaking, bush walks, swimming, 4x4 off road, boat or helicopter to White Island – a live marine volcano.
Opotiki
The name Opotiki originated from the name of a spring, O-Potiki-Mai-Tawhiti, situated on the eastern bluff above Waiotahi Beach. The extensive Bay of Plenty coastline provides large stretches of safe, sandy beaches alternated by rocky points ideal for swimming, fishing, boating, or scuba diving. There are also numerous rivers for fishing, rafting, kayaking and jet-boating. The town has a population of 5000 and is the gateway to Gisborne and the spectacular East Cape.
